Last week All Vegas Poker reported that the poker room at Excalibur is moving locations soon. I speculated that the poker room might be growing even larger. But I may have been dead wrong.
A source claiming inside knowledge reports that Excalibur’s poker room is actually shrinking - to only 14 tables. The reason cited for the reduction is that the poker room has been especially slow during recent months. According to this source, a lot of dealers there are not getting very many hours, and so management decided to reduce the size of the poker room.
This source also reports that management plans to end the spread limit games. It looks like Excalibur may only offer $2/4 limit Hold’em, $3/6 limit Hold’em, and $1/2 No Limit Hold’em.
From my perspective, the poker room at Excalibur still seems busy. When I stopped by recently, the place was packed, like usual. But I have only been there during peak hours, such as Friday and Saturday evenings. I can not speak for the health of the room during non-peak hours.
What I do know is that regardless of whether the poker room shrinks in terms of the number of tables, it will really suck to lose the spread limit games.
Excalibur has held a reputation for years as the place to go in Vegas for low limit poker, and a beginner friendly atmosphere. The $1-3 spread-limit game is the lowest limit game in town. The spread-limit games are terrific drinking games, especially for novice poker players trying poker for the first time.
Over the years, I have taken countless friends to the Excalibur poker room because I knew it was the safest place in Vegas for them to learn the ropes. If Excalibur drops the $1-3 game, I will take my friends elsewhere in the future. There are at least 30 Las Vegas poker rooms that offer $2/4 and $3/6.
