Congratulation Annie Duke!
Annie Duke surprised everyone with a come from behind win in ESPN's Tournament of Champions poker tournament. Despite being short stacked for much of the tournamnet Duke managed to outlast nine opponents, eventually tkaing down Phil Hellmuth heads up for the crown.
Annie Duke is a very special poker player -- certainly one of my favorites. She is well educated with undegraduate degrees from Columbia University and a graduate degree from U. Penn in Psychology. According to the bio on her website, Duke gave up an career in acedemia to play professional poker. Her brother, Howard Lederer, another well educated poker player, recognized Duke's potential, and staked her in the early days.
Duke lives in Las Vegas today. I have heard she occasionally plays in the Sunday night tournament at the Mirage, although I have never seen her there.
Duke's Tournament of Champions win is unquestionably her biggest poker victory. The tournament also raised the profile of Harrah's and the Rio hotel. I understand that the WSOP 2005 will be played at the Rio, so I keep wondering when that place is going to open a poker room.
If anyone knows anything about a future poker room at the Rio,please send me an e-mail.
