I called the Luxor Poker Room last week to get an update on their tournaments and learned some very interesting news -- All poker rooms owned by the Mandalay Resort Group are now smoke free.
This doesn't sound like huge news, until you understand just how many poker rooms are owned by this one company. Answer: 5 (just in Las Vegas).
As of September, 2004 the following hotels have non-smoking card rooms:
Excalibur
Circus Circus
Luxor
Mandalay Bay
Monte Carlo
The biggest impact for me is at the Excalibur. I'm not even a smoker, but I enjoyed bumming a smoke off a friend and lighting up at the table once in awhile. Of course, I only did this when I was getting my drink on, but that is almost every time I play at the Excalibur poker room (because the limits are so low -- why not?).
If you're a smoker, and you want to smoke at the table, then you will want to steer clear of these card rooms. In fact, Mandalay's move means that now the majority of poker rooms in Las Vegas are non-smoking.
A couple of places off the top of my head that still allow smoking are the El Cortez and the Plaza. Both downtown.
