Summary: South Coast Las Vegas opens its doors and reveals a very average poker room. It is annoyingly loud inside, and the poker tables were built with fatal black holes that will suck up your cards and chips. Oh well, at least the cocktail waitresses are smoke’n hot!
Content: I was really pumped up about the opening of the new South Coast casino tonight. I was hoping to find a high quality poker room there; perhaps something comparable to Silverton or Green Valley Ranch. I must admit I am disappointed. My expectations were not met.
The recently published description from an inside source is totally accurate. The poker room at South Coast seems like an afterthought.
Located at the bottom of the movie theater escalator, the poker room at South Coast is not a “real” poker room. It is nothing more than a wall and a desk with eight poker tables in between. There is a partial pony wall that separates the poker tables from nearby slot machines, but there is zero isolation.
You feel like you’re playing cards right in the middle of the casino floor, because you are. The environment is loud, but not in a fun way. A few Las Vegas poker rooms successfully get away with the wild casino vibe (Bally’s for example); but not South Coast.
At South Coast, some of the poker tables are less than five feet from slot machines. Also, unlike Bally’s, at South Coast there is no bar three feet away where drinks are practically beamed to you at warp speed. I’m sure this distinction has something to do with my difference of opinion between the environments.
The poker tables have serious problems. Whoever builds the poker tables for Coast Casinos desperately needs a lesson in quality table manufacturing.
As you may recall, the poker tables inside Gold Coast were equipped with black holes when Gold Coast opened its poker room about a year ago. I am shocked and amazed to report that like Gold Coast, the poker tables at South Coast are also equipped with built-in black holes.
When I refer to these black holes I am referring to the excess space between the table felt and armrests. This empty dead-zone is where your cards, quarters, and poker chips get sucked into if you’re not paying attention.
Tonight we had to pause the game three times so a player could lift up his armrest and the dealer could fish out a lost card. Totally unacceptable.
Other than the fatal black hole issue, the poker tables are pretty decent. They are brand new, covered with deep burgundy felt and South Coast logos. White commitment lines are drawn around the tables, but these betting lines are not enforced by dealers. The tables have auto-shufflers, but there are no built-in drink holders.
I really like the chairs. The chairs are cool and comfortable. They are standard style poker chairs, but they are covered in smooth peach-puff leather. The best feature however is that they are equipped with wheels on the bottom for easy mobility. But be careful if you tilt back and lift the front wheels off the ground! The rear wheels may slide out, and you could end up on your tail.
South Coast invested in six nice high-definition plasma televisions, but unfortunately they are all located on one single wall. This means that half the poker players can not comfortably see a television screen. Nice televisions, but bad placement.
Dealers are experienced and made few mistakes in my three hour session. I don’t think any of the dealers were hired straight from poker school, which is nice.
Management was friendly, but they were not trained well on the comp card system. At South Coast you can earn $1.25 per hour while playing poker, which is pretty good. But when I asked three managers to make me a comp card they stumbled operating the equipment, and eventually gave up. I still don’t have a comp card.
I was told that a lot of the managers are former supervisors from Wynn. This explains their player-friendly attitude, but the comp card goof-up was pretty bad, especially after I waited more than 10 minutes for the card to be made. At least they tried.
Poker tournaments and high-hand jackpots are expected within one month. The rake on all games is $3/10% max, which is competitive.
I saved the best for last.
South Coast has one feature that really impressed me, and may draw me back at some point in the future. What’s that?
The cocktail waitresses at South Coast are unbelievably hot! They also provide fantastic beverage service.
I do not know where South Coast hired all these beautiful ladies, but they did an awesome job in this department. Every single cocktail waitress I saw was a solid 7, 8, or 9 in terms of beauty.
And importantly, these women didn’t just have pretty smiles. They were really friendly, and brought drinks fast. One player at my table was putting back at least six beers per hour.
They also serve Red Bull, in the can upon request.
When I ordered my Red Bull (in the can), the waitress brought it within five minutes. But that wasn’t all. She noticed that the Red Bull cans were not very cold, so she went out of her way to bring an empty glass of ice along with my Red Bull. That is quality service! Combine that caliber service with their stunning good looks, and it’s clear that the cocktail waitresses at South Coast rule.
