Last month the Aladdin promoted Nick Gullo, an experienced casino executive, to poker room manager. Nick isn't wasting any time shaking things up over there either. In the past month Nick added a 2:00 am daily poker tournament to Aladdin's tournament schedule, and the poker room is now spreading a rare $5/10 limit hold'em game w/ a full kill.
The 2:00 am poker tournament is an unusual addition, but I like it. I don't know how many locals the Aladdin poker room will draw at 2:00 am to fill those seats, but if Aladdin can get the word out I'm certain there is a market for an event at this time. The 2:00 am poker tournament shares the exact same structure as the daily 7:00 pm tournament, right down to the starting chips. It is offered daily Monday through Friday.
The $5/10 limit hold'em game is more of a gamble. This particular limit is rarely spread in Las Vegas. It's a real struggle to find a regular $5/10 game anywhere in town. A lot of poker players don't like the $5/10 game. One of the most frequent reasons cited for their dislike is that because red chips ($5) are used in the game instead of blues ($1), the pots are considerably smaller in terms of the number of chips, especially when compared with a $4/8 or $6/12 game. Because there is a smaller quantity of chips in the pot, there is less action. Poor players evidently get less googly-eyed staring at a pot with only a few chips in it, and therefore they're less likely to get involved in the action.
Personally, I like the $5/10 limit poker game. It doesn't bother me that there are numerically less chips in the pot. This limit is in the range that I feel comfortable playing on a regular basis (which is $4/8 to $8/16), and I'm thankful that Nick decided to offer it at Aladdin's poker room. I hope it survives. Check it out for yourself.
