From my understanding they won't give you a poker room rate for playing the tourney and there's also no other comps for tourneys other then a voucher that gives you $10r playing any cash game for a 1/2 hr or $20 to $25 for playing a whole hour.
I believe you need to play 6 hours of cash to get the poker room rate. However the word on the street is the hotel dosen't really check with the poker room on hours played. I think if you just tell the 4 Queens you want to use the poker rate when you check in you should be good to go. Worst case if you and your wife play the tourney every day and at least a little cash they should be able to work something out.
Would I have to PM one of the "official" Binions staff on here (assuming they still post?) to verify any of this? I really don't care about comps that much but I'd like to find out how flexible they are on the poker room rate for people that primarily play tourneys. I'd play in a 1/2 NL game to bolster my time in a game, but I enjoy myself playing long stretches in the tourney format instead of cash games.
And am I reading it right that you have to work all the details about poker room rates at the 4Queens? I'd just as soon arrive and start playing non-stop as to spend a couple of hours getting whipsawed between people who said "oh, it doesn't work that way".
Any recommendations about who I could clarify this with?
Oops, one more question -- which nights are "weekends" for purposes of the poker room rates?

MCM, Binions' hotel is not open so they offer special rates at the Four Queens, which is their sister property. Their rates are very reasonable and you probably wouldn't find much variance for a "poker room" rate. You can either call their 800 number or e-mail them at reservations@fourqueens.com. If you've ever stayed at Binions or the Four Queens, they may give you the poker room rate as a courtesy. BTW - their weekend nights are Friday/Saturday. Weekday holidays count as a weekend day too, I think.
I called this number before my trip during March Madness and over St. Patty's holiday. I believe this connects you to the poker room desk. The guy that answered told me they like to see at least 4 hours of cash play. The AVP room rate page however says no min hours required. I talked to someone who used the room rate last year and apparently 4 Queens never confirmed with Binions. I kind of feel like it's sort an honor system and you should try to get in your 4 hours of play.
Really though give them a call and see what they say and if you can work something out with tourney play.

Another thing the $10r playing any cash game for a 1/2 hr or $20 to $25 for playing a whole hour after a tournement is no longer being done. Instead they had something about a $10 food comp for playing cash for an hour imeediately after the tourney.

I've been downtown many times, but rarely stayed in that part of the time except MSS, so I didn't know how to make sure I had things arranged in advanced with Binions/4Q. My primary goal is to assure myself of a reasonably-priced place to sleep with a minimum amount of running around or confusion.

Staying downtown will grant you both of those wishes. Multiple casinos in a 3-4 block area, a drug store where you can buy everything from milk to tourist trap gifts and quite a few place good places to eat. 4Q isn't anything fancy by any stretch of the imagination but if you're looking for a decent and quiet place to sleep, it's as good as any place, in my opinion.
In regards to Room rates and comps during the Binion's Poker Classic:
1). Room Rates: In order to qualify, a player has to have 4 hours of live play per day. During our once a year Classic Poker Tournament (May 25th thru June 8th, 2012), We will be giving room rates for playing who participate. These individuals will receive a tournament receipt for that room rate for that day at the Four Queens. Rates: $24.00 + tax during the week and $52.00 + tax weekends (Fri and Sat.) 2). Poker room Comps: Binion’s card holder will receive $2.00 an hour while playing live games. 3). During our Classic Tournament this year (2012), Tournament players will be receiving a $5.00 food voucher for the Deli and Café and also another $5.00 food voucher for playing in a live game the same day. We would ask all of our players to first check in at the Four Queen for convenience purposes, and then come to Binions Poker Room. At that time we will go over our comp criteria and answer any question that they may have.

Yes, it IS good to see Paul here. Paul has the distinction of being the first--and so far only--person to ever give me a warning for bad behavior in a poker room. But it's all good.
