I would typically play this since they don't take any house fee for this tournament and just have a $10 dealer add on, but I'm going to a party Saturday night with Mrs Flops, so won't be able to make it.
Seeing my post before Grrouchies post reminded me that I hadn't come back in this thread to note that Wally Womer is back as the manager of this room. Wally is very interested in getting input from players on ways to try and get things going in the room. If you are up that way and Wally is working be sure to say hi and let him know about any ideas you have. Wally's very aware of AVP, so mention you're an AVP'er when you talk to him.
The room has been regularly getting 1 or 2 NL games going in the evening with the first one starting usually between 5:30 and 6:30 on the weekends and 7ish during the week.
I think the competition there is fairly soft and not nearly as nitty as you might expect living across from Sun City. It's a pretty safe game for me as I get used to playing more cash (and therefore playing deeper), and you still have people very willing to put dead money in the pot so it can definitely be a profitable game.
I had a good night playing there last night despite going down a buy in early on when I got all in on a J84 rainbow flop holding AA against a V with QQ. The Q came on the turn so at least it was quick. From there I reloaded, started grinding some small pots, made a couple big hands, pulled a couple nice moves and the next thing I knew I was up a buy in +. It's definitely the best I've felt in a cash game environment well pretty much ever.
As we were getting the came going, I thought I heard someone say something about a button straddle. I figured it'd be interesting to see if we could get one going. Everyone was agreeable and someone suggested that the min straddle be $5 and the max $50.
It was a lot of fun and the button straddle really goosed the game up. I talked to Wally about it afterwards suggesting that they make it a regular feature. He was definitely on board with the idea.
I think it's probably good to tweak the max amount of the straddle as a $50 straddle is probably not the best for the game, but I think it would be fun and make for a very live game if they could get that going regularly at Aliante.
$50 straddle? I would leave the table immediately. Might as well just drop the money in a slot machine or roulette wheel.
Yeah, and no one ever actually straddled for that much. Although there was one guy who would straddle for like $20 to "keep people honest". That was great when you woke up with a hand on those straddles. Generally, the button straddles were between $5 and $10. I think those were great for getting the game juiced up.
I talked some with Wally afterwards about how to tweak the rules a little as I mentioned. One of the tweaks would definitely be to restrict the amount of the straddle. In general though I thought this was good for the game and hopefully it will become a fixture over at Aliante.
I think button straddles are not good for the game. Especially higher button straddles.
I would feel differently if the game had no cap on the buy in and had a larger minimum buyin
But in my mind when you put a $10 straddle in a $1-2 No Limit game with a buyin of $50 -$300 the game becomes a ridiculpously short stacked.
Would you play a $5-$10 NL game with a buyin between $50 and $300? I think most of us wouldn't if we hand any options ...... But that is pretty much what a $1-$2 game with a $10 button straddle becomes.

I think these are good points - it definitely makes the game more short-stacked and for the times when this was playing the other night, there were definitely times when the game was basically playing like a $2-$5 game. I liked it personally because I think that most of the folks weren't really adjusting right depending on whether the straddle was on or not. So I basically got to play a bigger game when it favored me and - most of the time - when I was in worse position was able to play smaller stakes.
Maybe that all goes away if it becomes a regular feature and people get more savvy about playing (or more savvy players make their way out to the sticks), but for the other night it made the game great.
