Well after 3.5 months away from live poker, I decided I'd give it a shot today. After having read Tommy Angelo's book, Elements of Poker, I thought I'd give it a shot. I came away with $48 less dollars, but much more ahead emotionally. At no time in the game, did I let my emotions get the better of me. I kept to myself and my cards and found I played better and learned more. It's amazing how much one can learn by just listening to the other players. I now look forward to going back. Thanks to those who recommended Tommy Angelo to me (I think it was Dap Poker) and thanks to Tommy Angelo for writing it. I also payed a lot more attention to position and the cards I had in what position and how I played them. I played a little differently and think if I hadn't played the way I did, I would have lost a lot more money.

Awesome Jess! Glad to hear it. Winning isn't everything in poker, as we all know that we can't control the cards. But playing well, feeling confident, and continuously learning are key. Keep us posted on your next trip to the tables!

Jess,

Congrats on your return to live poker!

Sorry to hear you didn't book a win in your first trip back, since that would have been nice after putting in some work away from the felt. But, it sounds like you put yourself in a good place to be more successful over the long term and that is important (after all we all really only play 1 poker session for our entire lives). Sounds like you are a lot happier walking away form the table and that short term losses are going to nag at you less. Both of those are really important. Also, glad to hear that you kept learning while at the table;that could be a huge advantage to you if you are playing in the same room regularly. You'll be able to make better reads based on how someone is playing right now -- e.g., taking advantage of a normally tight player who is currently tilting. In any case, if it was my advice, glad it helped and if it wasn't I'll happily take credit.

Dave

Congrats on getting back to the felt. Position is one of the most important, if not THE most important aspect of playing. Keep thinking about it and notice the difference in hands that won and lose out of position as compared to in position and you will start seeing significant improvement in your results.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I didn't win any money in this session but I think if I keep plugging away and learning I am only destined to win more often. Notice I said more often. :) I was pretty proud of myself for not tilting and/or showing my frustration. There were quite a few players at the table that exhibited a lot of external signs of frustration (i.e. complaining about the cards, sighing, etc.). There was one lady at the table who didn't seem to consider position at all and played just about every hand. She was to my right and she had the healthiest stack at the table (about $1k). Seems excessive to have that much at a $1/$2 $100 max table, but who am I to judge? ;) I kept waiting for a seat to her right to open but I guess it was probably good that she was on my right because I could see myself getting frustrated if I limped into hands with her to raise behind me. I'd have stayed longer and bided my time but my husband had to go to work and did not feed the dogs before he left so I had to get home.

Looking forward to my next session. Will probably play the Friday before MLK day or that weekend.

Dave, I didn't get the book you recommended in my other thread but found the Elements to be very helpful in putting things into perspective and I'm not even done reading it yet. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their game.

I can't really agree that winning is not everything in Poker. It is a game and everyone plays a game because everyone thinks that could win, if not, they think they have a chance to defeat someone or everyone.Image

Honestly, I think Jon's point was meant more like "winning this first live session isn't everything" or even "a winning result isn't everything". Remember you can play perfect poker even get someone all in drawing to a 2% hand and still lose.

In addition, the original poster had let some bad sessions get to them. So the fact they had a losing session, but kept their emotions in check and still played well means that they probably increased their edge over the long term. That is a much better result than a winning session without having fixed the emotional leak.

Precisely Dave. I'm very proud of that accomplishment. That and the fact that I minimalized my losses. I am very hopeful of a more money positive result the next time.
