This was an interesting hand at my local casino which is reg filled but still profitable .. This hand was a tough spot for me and idk if I made the right play
There is a straddle for 4$ a few limpers I make it 15 on the button with .. I get two callers flop comes
One of the V's says "be careful son "and leads into me for 23 ... I call
Turn is .. He goes quiet and checks ... I check
River is making the board
He doesn't say a word and bets 80 into about 100.. Hero?
--Some history on the V he is a decent player who is limper and plays his suited connectors for draws .. Has been running well and has about 400 prior to the hand starting.. He talks a lot and has saved people money by telling him he hit huge hands and showed but has also been caught lying once.. IMO he set it up the angle in smaller pots to get folds in bigger ones .. In this hand he is silent on the final 2 streets .. I'll post the outcome later
I find that when talkative players suddenly get quiet, they usually have strong holdings and dont want to give away any information. Did he show his hand? I have a feeling he either had AJ KJ J9 A9 K9, maybe even JJ+
Button raises don't get much credibility, so his flop bet could have been a probe to see if you had an actual hand. When you called, though, he had to have upgraded his assessment of what you had (i.e., not K9o or something like that). Then he fired a good-sized bet on the river, after the check-check on the turn confirmed that while your hand was enough to call his flop bet, it wasn't good enough to bet the turn--it was mediocre, in other words. Unfortunately, this means his range was now pretty wide, as it would include just about any hand if he thought he could push you out of the pot. I would therefore make a crying call. The real problem arose because you checked behind on the turn. If you had put in even a 1/2 pot sized bet at that juncture, and he stuck around, you'd know your hand was no good. You never really took the opportunity in this hand to find out where you were at.

I don't like this spot at all. But, looking at his betting pattern: bet, check, bet- I smell something here. He could have a decent drawing hand, like 4-5, even A-4 suited, and figured his draw was probably best on the flop. He wanted a free card on the turn, and got one. He didn't get there on the river, so he tried to buy it with a big bet (mostly because our hero hasn't shown any strength in the hand).
Given the situation...I would probably make a crying call. He can't put you on a monster. If he puts you on AK, AQ, he knows you can't call. I just don't see him betting that big if he has a boat or trips.
Like I said, I don't like this spot. You have to bet the turn for information.

At first I wanted to say weak jack, but I think it's exactly a4, 45, a5. His river bet sizing is inconsistent with his line thus far, he goes from half pot, check, to 4/5 pot after all the cards are out. Snap and take a note whether he is a bet big for missed value/slowplayed or a bet big when realizing it's the only way he can win on the river.

I'd raise to 180 here.
I think not only do you beat bluffs, but you can get him to lay down anything less than trip 9s. He'd be pretty stubborn to call with AJ.
I disagree. Our line would look worse than his: preflop raise, flat 1/2 pot on flop, check back turn.... raise this river? It's an easy call for AJ, let alone any jack at this point. Unless you play very tricky and he is aware of this thru your history.

Ya you guys were right about where I was.. My first inclination was a weak J but it didn't make sense with the bet sizing .. I think he polarized his range with the river bet and the physical tell helped me justify the bluff catch, mike caro says silence and stillness out of the normal means weakness, lol, i know tells are never universal but it seemed a perfect fit for the V and it really tipped me over into call territory here .. I called and took down the pot he actually had a Q3 ?!
I was going to bet the turn but I didn't want to value town myself against a weak checked J which is where i put him initially , and I also didn't want to get check raised semi bluffed off the best hand or check raise owned if he had a big hand. I chose the soft line
