I recently discovered this jewel of a website and I have been reading much of the forum posts particularly those on NLHE cash strategy. Unlike other websites there appears to be a brotherhood of constructive insights and good-natured ribbing that makes this site enjoyable to follow.
As for me...I am an active recreational player (playing local casinos 5-10 times / month) in my mid 40s. I am located in the Chicago suburbs so I play all the local rooms here but I travel a fair amount and have played just about every room in IL, IN, WI, MI and IA. I also travel to LV 2-3 times per year for poker, drinking and sports betting.
I primarily stick with $1/$2 or $1/3NL but will play $2/$5 as well. I only play LHE in Vegas when I am there with friends and rarely play tournaments. I am a winning player, though not as much as I like, and I am continually working on my game to plug my leaks. My biggest challenge is effectively retaining opponents tendencies over long sessions and keeping my focus over 4+ hour sessions.
I look forward to continuing to follow the lively discussion and participating where I think I may be able to add something useful. If anyone has any questions about Midwest play please don't hesitate to ask.
Hi Steve! Are you taking regular breaks when you play? If you're sitting in your seat for 4 hours straight without a break, it's no wonder you're losing focus. I personally try to sit out an orbit every 90 minutes. I get up, walk around and think of things other than poker. But I still sometimes sit in the chair too long and my game suffers for it. If you haven't already, check out Tommy Angelo's book Elements of Poker. It's terrific when it comes to that kind of stuff. Good luck!
