This is the closest poker room to my house (about 3 hours south). Poker pretty much sucked as there was a $5 limit on all bets, but they just raised the limits to $100 as of 7/1/09. Was wondering if anybody has played there since the increase. Gotta think it will be a pretty big fish tank for the first month or two. Was thinking about making the drive down this weekend, but would like to hear how the action is.

TIA

Hey JJ

I play in Blackhawk every few months or so, as I live in Denver. (Tournaments only! I won't play the 2-5 spread nonsense anymore!) Used to play at the Ameristar (formerly the Mountain High, before that it was the Hyatt), but now I stick with the Golden Gates room.

I haven't been up yet for the new stakes, but I am very curious to see what kind of games they will spread. I assume there will be a variety of 3/6, 4/8, 5/10, and (on the weekends) 8/16 and 10/20, varying from casino to casino as each room tries to establish a niche.

I am curious to see if one of the rooms will put together some kind of modified "NL" game in which the max bet is $100. I plan to make some phone calls to see what the deal is before I drive up, though. Whatever they are spreading now is likely to change as the casinos adjust to the players' tastes.

You do know it hasn't even been 48 hours yet since the law changed, right?

My guess is that it would be like Arizona - not really no limit but a 2-100 spread. The $100 limit by definition negates any possibility of having true No Limit.

You make it sound like I am some kind of degenerate gambler when you put it that way...

I went up on Monday, June 6 and played in a tourney at the Gilpin. I talked for a while with the staff and they told me they were offering a $1 - $100 spread with various blinds, starting at .50 - $1 and up. I also stopped into the Golden Gate poker room and they were doing about the same with the $1 - $100 spread, starting at $1 - $100 blinds and up.

I really enjoyed the Gilpin poker room the staff and dealers were great. I will definitely head back there ASAP.

from what I have read the games are still being played the same just with a change in the max bet. The donktastic play still remains from what i have read online.

Im stationed down in the springs and will make plenty of trips to cripple creek when i get back from iraq in about 6 weeks

There is a blog that used to be called "Life of a Las Vegas Poker Dealer" that is now entitled "Life as a Central City Poker Floor." He relocated, first to New Mexico, now to Colorado, but has maintained his blog along the way.

It's not entirely about poker---he talks about a variety of things---but there is a lot of poker content. His last two posts deal specifically with what's been happening since the limits change. It's an enjoyable blog in general, but might be very helpful to people interested in Colorado poker:

FWIW, he used to deal at the Pink Chicken, so I'm guessing some AVPers know him, or have at least sat at his table when he was in LV.

Thanks guys. Sounds like the action is good, but not steady. A weekend place for sure. If I end up going, I'll post a mini-trip report.

I've been lurking at this site for years, really had nothing to say but with the new gaming laws in Co. , I'll give you the heads up. I live in the Denver metro area and go up to Back Hawk every week (average 40 hrs a month for the past 4 years) playing "donkey kong" 2-5 limit poker. I've kept a loose written record of my hours and money made, I think i"m about even, with the rake and the amount of hands you must win I would like to say that it is IMPOSSIBLE to make money in low limit poker(I don't care what they say in the books, the don't play in BLack Hawk where 90% of hands go to the river with an average of 3 callers) Since the new gaming laws I've logged in 33 hours with a profit of $980. I think the game is very beatable now, the key is finding the right table. The donkeys still play like 2-5 limit (any 2 suited card, chasing without proper odds, raising with a 7 high flush draw). You just have to patient and play AB poker. not even ABC poker. LIke I've said the key is the right table, where there is at the most 2 spewtards, any more than that then it's like playing low limit where luck is 99% the factor. I find the most lucrative casinos being The Lodge and Ameristar on the weekends. I've been to Vegas at least 15 times and the Colorado players are much tougher because the majority are locals, however if you find the right table (1-2-100 sl, all the casinos offer them)and the usual weekender , I think the game can be profitable. I hope this report helps, if you have any other questions, be free to post and if I can help, I'll try to answer them.
