Going to Vegas at the end of June for the WSOP and was wondering what the $20 trick is, that everyone is talking about? Are there any other pieces of valuable info to make this trip better and more affordable?

Transportation tip: I never rent a car. The "Deuce" is a bus line that runs along the strip and to downtown (Fremont street casino area). It is the only transportation I ever use (except for taxi to and from airport). Just get on and buy a ticket ( always get the 24- hour pass for $7). If you want to go to Orleans, catch the free shuttle at Bill's. If you want to go to Rio, catch the shuttle from Harrah's.
I'm going to go the opposte way of Austin. Every time I have gone to Vegas, I have rented a car. Renting a car makes getting around to non-strip venues easier. I made a couple of trips to Henderson during my last visit and the rental car was a blessing. My personal favorite company to rent from is Alamo. If you sign up for their insiders club you can usually find some really good rates. I will say every time I have been to Vegas it has been from a Monday to Friday. I can't speak for what the rates are on the weekend. I have found Las Vegas easy to drive in and I like the freedom of not having to wait for a bus or pay cab fare. I believe the total cost for my Monday to Friday rental last October, taxes included was $92.00 If you do decide to rent a car, call your insurance agent to verify that your insurance covers you driving a rental car, plus find out if your policy covers "loss of use". The rental car company will charge you per day the number of days the car is in the repair shop so this coverage goes beyond coverage for collision, should you have an accident. My second tip, especially since you are going in June, is to stay hydrated. I went through a bout of dehydration on a trip in August once, not a pleasant experience.

The Las Vegas area offers some beautiful scenery. It's worth getting away from the strip for that alone. I have a pet peeve about the "fine dining" in strip hotels. They are basically serving mass produced food, slapping a celebrity chef's name on it and charging three times as much. Having a car will allow you to find some of the excellent dining choices outside of the casinos.

There are shuttles at the airport too that take groups to any and all hotels, and cost 1/3 the cost of a taxi. Follow signs in airport for "shuttles".

The $20 trick works but I usually give more if it's a big upgrade as I usually stay a week. I beleive there is a site that lists what hotels it works in. Can't hurt to try.
I always have a car as I won't wait in cab lines and a bus ain't happening. Just my personal choice. I've use carrentals.com as they list multiple companies and don't take a deposit for reservations. If u drive take the side roads avoid the strip especially on weekends.
Nightlife starts late there so prepare to adjust to that if you are out partying. Most clubs go strong well past 2am

Hover Dam is a nice side trip. Not far and a site to behold.

I have been going to Vegas at least once a year in August, and after a year or 2 of waiting for the Duece in 110 degree weather, I decided in 2007 that a rental was the way to go! I usually get 1 for a week, from Dollar, for under $100 (before fees and taxes). How else can you visit Red Rock, Eastside Cannery and Sunset Station?
Heck, if you valet park, then by the time the car arrives to you it has a "LIL Bit" of a chill already going (because the valet guy will turn the AC full blast when he gets in)!!
