I am planning on playing in the mixer on the 27th as well. Make sure you call and get on the list early in the day. I've seen the list started as early as 10am.

Make sure you're there to have fun, and not to win any money. I've played it three or four times, and was lucky enough to leave ahead $19 one time, the other times I had a blast even though I lost well over $100 each of the other times. If you're there to make money, you'd be at the wrong table. Some of the games are so amazing that you need to have the rules in front of you for a few hours to figure out what they are. 3-2-1 Omaha is one of those killer games... You can't raise enough to stop people from seeing 3 flops.
I think you can do both. While some of the games are indeed esoteric--and that's why I always do have the rules in front of me. But poker is poker, and once you understand what's good and what's not (for example, anything less that a full house is almost never good in 3-2-1 Omaha, and one- and especially two-pair hands are much more playable than in "normal" Omaha because you're getting 3 flops). I think I've learned quite a bit (far from being an expert, of course) by watching the players who come to the game and who are obviously good. The games are a blast to play, frustrating, exhilarating, but (knock on wood) I've had more winning sessions there than losing ones.
Planning to be there on the 20th. Hope to see some AVP folks while I'm there.

hey guys im coming to vegas in august from australia and was looking to play in the mix game.
it seems that everywhere i have read recommends IP as the place to go for mix games, followed by the venetian.
what should my course of action be on the sunday so im guaranteed a seat? also, who choses the games? is it dealers choice? can we play games that arent on the list??

For the IP, call the poker room any time after noon on Sunday to get on the list. There are a lot of regulars, so the game will fill up fast. Sometimes, there will be two tables, but better to lock up a sure seat.
Might also check out Aria for a 4/8 or 6/12 HORSE or mixed game.
For mixed games, players often have a say in what games are played, selected from a group of games placards. The IP has several "odd-ball" games not found in other casinos, such as 3-2-1 Omaha or 4-Card Pineapple with an Ocean.

There is also a GREAT 4/8 horse game at the ventian. I played this past friday and there were 15 people on a list waiting for a seat. It was great action and a lot of fun.

Unless the AVP tournament goes more than 24 hours, nothing will keep me away.

Oh, nice - didn't know there was an AVP tourney 'm more of a sporadic haunter of these boards) but good luck to all the players. If there's a lot of AVPers in town this weekend, seems like the mixed game might be hoppin'.
