Couple years ago I rented a car and drove out there. Did not know it was a tourist trap. Thought I could just visit. Found out how much the tour cost and would have had to ride a bus with a bunch of asian tourists. I forget how long the "short" tour would have been. I think a couple hours. Turned around and left. I'm way to cheap and would much rather have to visit something on my own schedule. Ended up driving down some back roads to get to see some of the west rim. Best part of the drive was the Hoover dam and seeing the new bridge over it.

Wanna see the big ditch? Book one night at the south rim (Tusayan), start from Vegas after breakfast. It is quite a ride but you will have enough time to see the Grand Canyon. Have some Mexican food in Tusayan. Next morning early rise, see sunrise at Mather Point and drive back to Vegas.

The Grand Canyon is awesome. In June both the North Rim and South Rim should be open. There's more "stuff" to see and do at the South Rim which is open year round.

I really wanted to do the skywalk before I looked into it. I'd agree it looks like tourist trap. It's not near either the North Rim or South Rim. I forget how far the drive was but it seemed long -- should be easy to look up.

It is called a window seat on the plane ride in. No all kidding aside- try Red Rock canyon- better hikes. You can do what you want. Nice drive as well.
