So keeping with tradition, I have made a giant pot of homemade meatballs and "gravy". I saw the recipe on emeril live 3 years ago, and now I make it several times a year, with NFL opening weekend being a must.
I have made 24 fist sized meatballs that gave been simmering on the stove since 11 and they still have 4 more hours to make the place smell even better.
My roommate asked me how I can sit here and smell this and not want to eat, he had to leave for a but so he didn't get tempted!!!
Anyone else have any opening week traditions???

As you might expect by my moniker I LOVE football season. In point of fact, this is my favorite time of year for both the weather and football. That said, week 1 of college football is always a let down to me becuase the games are usually tune up games, or in the case of ND and Michigan season ending games) so things don't start heating up until this weekend.
I live in Chicago, transplanted from OH, and on my street there are homes wilth graduates from many different universities so football season is a great rivalry and we frequently head down to someone's basement to watch the games and swill down beer. What a blast!
For Pro football it is a different story. I am a through-and-through Steelers fan. I make 2-3 trips to Steelers games per year but in Chicago everyone is a Bears fan so I have adopted them as well. I bring this up becuase my "tradition" since moving here 12 years ago is to tailgate (at my house) every weekend in September. We fire up the grill, drink beer have a cigar and then settle in to a chair in the garage and watch the game on my 42" tv. This is truly living.
As for a more recent tradition several of us now schedule a Vegas trip around a great Bears game. Last year was incredible, although it cost be $200, when we were in Vegas for the Arizona come-from-behind-but-to-win-but-not-cover game. This year we are there for the Green Bay Sunday Night Game. Now that is a tradition.
