Took my truck for an oil change yesterday. After that I came home and did not go out till this morning when I drove about 11 miles mostly on the highway. As I parked I saw smoke coming from the hood, turned off the engine and took a look. The oil cap had not been replaced (it was still sitting atop the airfilter housing) Oil was everywhere. Pretty ugly mess and smell of burnt oil was strong.
Had the truck towed back up to the shop that did the oil change. They cleaned it up and put new oil in.
I now have the truck and drove it home, aside from the still lingering smell of burnt oil it appears to be running fine. No lights have come on.
My question is do I have to worry about engine damage? Should I take it to teh dealership to be checked out? Or would any damage this might have done be evident?

No damage done except the lousy service, make sure you are refunded for the tow. I would ask whoever changed your oil to pay for a complete car & engine wash to get all the oil residue off of your engine and any other place on the car oil might of found it way to.

It should be fine, but i would have them pay for a steam clean of the engine bay. the oil will burn off eventually, but its still a messy deal. Most cars have a baffle under the oil fill on valve cover,so even if cap is left off no oil will come out. I did say most not all. What kinda truck is it? You maybe lost a quart or so at most out of the valve cover and as long as you have at least half capacity in oilpan it shouldnt have done any damage.

This happened to me once about two years ago. I just drove back to the dealership where I had it serviced, they topped it off (didn't lose much) and tried to clean up the oil. Absolutely no long-term damage- my car now has 170,000 miles and still runs flawlessly.
