So I had surgery on my left hip yesterday. I had bursitis and had the bursa sac removed. I'll be recuperating for at least 2 weeks, if not longer. Activity limited to essential tasks only for at least a week, probably 2, and walking with the aid of crutches. Any suggestions of how I can fill my time while immobile? Books, movies, tv shows?
I know the feeling. Last year I had 3 surgeries and had to kill a lot of time laying around. I hated it and wound up returning to work early and taking naps on a cot in my office. The time passes real slowly.
I suggest:
- Watch Season 1 of the Wire. - Read the first part of the Theodore Roosevelt trilogy. - Read any book by Mark Steyn. - Get a few games of Words with Friends going (let me know and I will play you) - Movies: Ides of March hate Clooney but this one was pretty good); The Hunt for Red October; and License to Drive
I'm not sure if it's available for streaming anywhere, but Season 1 of the Showtime series Homeland is excellent and is the kind of show where you can easily watch one after another. For poker books, the new book on tells that Vookenmeister posted about last week sounds like a good choice. In addition, Jared Tendler's Mental Game of Poker would be a good choice also. For something that isn't directly poker related, but that has some interesting reads about thinking a little differently, I would also recommend DUCY by Davd Sklansky.

Thanks guys! I'm waiting for the book Vook mentioned to come out for the Nook. Then I will read it. Right now, I'm re-reading Tomm Angelo's book. Who is Mark Steyn and what kinds of books does he write? Aside from poker books, I'm a big fan of murder/mystery/suspense type and thriller books. I'm a huge Stephen King fan but I've already read most of his books.
I'll check out the shows and movies. How do I find you for playing Words vinny? I only have it on my phone.
Mark Steyn is a brilliant conservative commentator who has interesting views on many things. Well worth a read on any of his books for a perspective on America from someone who is not originally an American, regardless of your political leanings. He is a witty writer that is as far from boring as can be.
I'll get back to you on Words. Never played anyone that wasn't a Facebook friend. I'll have to figure it out. Real name is Brian, by the way.

If you're feeling old school, "The 39 Steps" is a classic suspense adventure novel and a fun read. It's also the basis of a cool Hitchcock movie. A bit more contemporarily, I enjoyed Caleb Carr's "The Alienist," a period serial killer mystery/thriller set in turn of the century NY. Kinky Friedman's detective stories are also fun in small doses. Finally, though it's not exactly a mystery novel, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nite-Time" was a fantastic read.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Jess,
I'd say pick up Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy -- the book or the movie. And for mysteries, I'm a big fan of the Sherlock Holmes books by Arthur Conan Doyle.
Also, if you want to read about poker (not strategy), I liked The Professor, the Madman & The Suicide King and Positively Fifth Street. I think I remember you said you'd be in Vegas for part of the WSOP, so I'd say reading The Biggest Game in Town could get you psyched up for that trip. I haven't read Cowboys Full but that also looks really good.
I know you like motorcycles, so you might get a kick out of the series Sons of Anarchy -- of course, I say that as a guy who's a huge fan of mob movies and the gang in that series does a lot of things that remind of mobsters.
Of course most importantly, take it easy -- heal up and get well soon!
Dave

Ooh yeah, +1 on everything Dave said, particularly 5th St. and the Biggest Game. And some of Doyle's non-Holmes stuff is pretty fun too. Take care of yourself.

Well hello, Brian. I'm on facebook but I don't do apps on there. I know, weird since I have it on my phone and that's probably less private. Do you have it on any other device (iPad, Nook, etc.)?

Thanks guys! I'll look into the books suggested. Dave, yes I love motorcycles and I am a HUGE fan of Sons of Anarchy. Jax is totally hot. I too am a huge fan of mob movies/series and used to love the show on HBO (drawing a blank right now - thank you drugs). I love all the classic mob movies too. Scarface being my favorite. But anyway...I'm sure between the reading, movies, poker and this joint I will manage to keep myself entertained in between highs and naps. lol BTW - do dudes dig scars on chicks?
