What happens when you put foil in the microwave....

Hello all,

Stupidity, party of one, your table is ready!

So, last night, when the wife got home from work, the kids got all excited and start tugging on her for attention (standard). She takes our daughter to the bathroom (she is almost finished potty training), and askes me to reheat the Chilis takeout we have in the fridge for the kids.

I follow suit, and grab the styrofoam container from the microwave, which has a corn on the cob, and a half a kids sandwich, and toss it in the microwave for two minutes. Then I turn away to get some water and set the table.

After about 45 seconds, I smell something, and look back at the microwave. Damn container is on fire inside!!!!

Holy CRAP! I immediately turn off the microwave and open the door and with a huge breath, blow out the fire. Burned styrofoam embers and ash are in the air, but all is okay.

Apparantly, I neglected to notice that the corn was wrapped in aluminum foil! Good one, Michael.

Food was not salvageable, but the microwave was okay (just quite a bit of soot marks on the inside and some melted plastic). CLeaned it all up, and works fine.

My parents always had a microwave when I was little, but I have never done that before. Nice one.

It was a learning experience, for sure. :oops:

Michael, think about this one.

Open a car hood and near the fan it says "Keep hands clear".

You know why that is written there? Because some moron actually put their hands in there one time in order for that warning to show up.

Actually, I don't put styrofoam in the microwave. That stuff is toxic. Put your leftovers on a paper or other microwave safe plate for best results!

Good point. I was just being lazy. We normally nuke the food in the styro, but only for short periods. Should cut back on that, for sure.

And Photoc, at least I didn't put someone all in with quad sixes in Razz. :wink:

It happens! About 15 years ago I got a chicken sandwich and onion rings from Sonic (first time ever eating Sonic). Did not know onion rings were so huge and filling. Since onion rings filled me up, I put bag with chicken sandwich bag in refrig at work for the next day.

Not looking in bag and therefore not knowing chicken was in foil, I stuck bag into microwave. I walked away for 60 seconds, only to come back to a bag on fire, smoke pouring from the microwave, smoke alarm going off, Fire Department responding (it was in a government building too), and the top of the microwave melted all over inside.

I think they felt bad that I had so much egg on my face they didn't make me pay for the microwave. LOL

I'll cheer you up with a story....

When I was 22ish my girlfriend, whom I lived with, thought she would be sweet and do something special for me on V-Day. I get home from work and notice a [censored] load of balloons on the ground. Some had strings tied to them and were hanging off various pieces of furniture. Well 10 seconds later she appears from the bedroom in a very nice outfit and gives me my present. Here's the good part.... We walk to the kitchen to get something to drink and she says she's kinda sad. I ask why like I'm suppose to. And she says.........."Well I'm sad because I spent 2 hours blowing up all these balloons and none of them will float. They just won't float."

Of course I laughed.

I worked in a print shop in LA; we had a lot of workers from countries other than the US. When we had a fire in the microwave one day, I asked the offending party what they'd put in it. Turned out it was just a coffee mug they wanted to heat up, but they thought the oven was so small it would take 15 minutes to do the job.

Then there was the guy from Oklahoma who was wiping down one of the machines with kerosene (in a small brick room with no outside ventilation) and had a lit cigarette in his mouth while doing so.

I don't know how I got to middle age, given my own stupidity and the contributions of others.

We all know that if you put a fork in a microwave, it will start an electrical storm, but why do some microwaves have metal racks in them and it doesn't conduct electricity?
