The hotel rooms were some of the dumpiest on Fremont Street. If the company had any money (which they don't) I would expect them to invest some money in modernizing the rooms so they can charge more and people will actually want to stay there.
Of course this means that the casino will be even less busy now.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the whole place go under within a year.
It is sad to hear that the coffee shop is closing. A lot of people had a soft spot for that place. It's absence now gives people even less of a reason to step foot in the casino.

DayTripping (and others), has the casino floor itself looked busy to you when you've been there. I don't go downtown often and haven't been in Binion's since October, but the casino floor always looked fairly busy to me. Perhaps I haven't witnessed a representative sample. I was always under the impression that the poker room and pit did (by downtown standards) decent business.

I was in there sat night and there was decent play going on in the pit. Poker room had five tables going when I sat and four going when I left around midnight. Slots looked dead.

I had hoped that since the guy who owns the 4 Queens bought Binion's that the rooms at Binion's would get the same renovations that the 4 Queens did. I've stayed twice at the 4 Queens in the last couple of years and while the rooms were small they were nice and I think I was paying like $30 a night (and no ridiculous resort fee that I can remember). I had considered a Binion's room for my most recent 12 day trip which was the end of nov into Dec 3rd but after reading enough room reviews and finding out it was a TBC fav spot I opted not to stay there.
I am coming down this Saturday for a 6 day poker trip. We had booked Binions, but then it closed, so our reservation was moved to 4 Queens. Few questions:
1) Is 4 Queens ok room-wise? I have stayed at GN and Plaza downtown before - is 4Q somewhere b/w these 2 in terms of quality?
2) Is anybody playing the tourneys at Binions? That 10K chip tourney was one of the main attractions.
3) Is there any point in playing downtown at all now, or should I change our hotel to something on the Strip? I really liked the GN poker room last time, but if it's dead...
the 4 Queens is way above the Plaza but below the GN. I've stayed at 4Q three times in the last two years and was never disappointed. The last trip from summer 09 the rooms at 4Q had room safes. I did stay at Excalibur November 09 and the lowest level rooms there do not have room safes. I have never had a bad meal at the Magnolia's Veranda Cafe at the 4Q and would recommend the 4Q as an OK place to stay. There is always the option to get a bus pass and ride the Deuce down to the strip.
ooops.... forgot one thing I liked about staying at the 4Q. I always go the Walgreens and buy the small size stryofoam cooler and keep it stocked with water/gatorade/redbull since the lowest level 4Q rooms do not have fridges. (yup, I'm a lowroller....)

Thanks. It's good to know re safes - that was a big concern.
